Community Dive: Make an Impact this Holiday Season

When the holiday season rolls around, many of us cherish the time we get to spend with our loved ones. During this time, however, it’s also easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the season. Hectic travel schedules and frenzied last-minute shopping can make the holidays more stressful than they need to be. So instead of getting caught up in what gifts to buy, spend some time thinking about how you can give back to those who may be less fortunate. After all, giving back is the best way to spread holiday cheer.

Why You Shouldn’t Volunteer (Only) During the Holidays

There’s only one issue that nags at our guest blogger, Tatjana Freund: Why volunteer only around the holidays? People who need assistance may need it all year-round, not just in the two-month period that volunteering seems to be crystallized around. She understands that the holidays can be lonely and bring additional sadness for some, but she’d also like to challenge people who enjoy volunteering at holiday services to try it out in every season. Holiday Giving

Curbside Donation Drive
St. Anthony's

St. Anthony's Curbside donation drive eliminates waste by providing their programs with the funds to purchase the exact items needed, and stretches every donation dollar further by harnessing bulk buying power! All donations go directly to fund St. Anthony’s programs and services. Share with your coworkers, family, and social networks. If you prefer to donate in-person, check out stanthonysf.org/curbside for more details.

Know the impact of your Donation
Goodwill

Did you know that many donation bins actually benefit for-profit organizations? Some for-profit companies maintain the bins and then process and resell the goods, often outside of your community, giving only 4 to 6 percent of the profits to nonprofit organizations. Take a little time to donate at bins that are working to help your local community, like Goodwill's. The revenue from your donated items is then used to provide job training and offer support services near you. Check out the Donation Impact Calculator to get an idea of how your donated items make a difference.

Holiday Volunteering
Project Open Hand

Join Project Open Hand this Holiday season in providing meals with love to our sick and the elderly neighbors. During the Holidays, volunteers will help prepare, assemble, and distribute over 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries each day for our clients in San Francisco and Oakland. They still have several shifts open, find yours here!

Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. This year on December 3rd, this global generosity movement unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts and everyone has something to give. Find your local Giving Tuesday movement here!

Reel Impact Festival - Storytelling for Social Change

The 4th annual Reel Impact Festival (RIF) celebrates how social impact companies and non-profit organizations use storytelling to share and grow their impact. Join the vibrant impact community on Dec 5 at the Impact Hub in Oakland to connect with entrepreneurs, change-makers and media professionals around the power of film and story.

New for 2019, RIF will be preceded by the Reel Impact Workshops. Through hands-on training, Bay Area experts in media and communications will help participants identify their organization’s message, understand how to create clear, compelling video content, and develop their marketing strategy. The workshops will be followed by the Reel Impact Festival, an evening of curated video reels, inspiration and networking with local change-makers. Tickets at bit.ly/2019RIF. Use code DiveIn to save 10% on the ticket price!
